with the crisp frosty ground crunching under your feet and clear cold skies
showing off breathtakingly views. In order to really enjoy are great walk this
time of year the key is in the preparation, as a wise man once said ‘there is
no wrong weather, just the wrong clothes’, so in this week’s blog we’re going
to give you some tips for having a great winter walk.
Make
everything nice and toasty
If you
start off nice and warn the better the chances are that you’ll stay that way.
Why not warm up your base layers, sock, gloves and hats next to a fire or on
the radiator. Be careful to keep an eye on them you don’t want them to get so hot
that they catch alight.
Keeping
at the right temperature
When
we think about a winter walk the first thing, we think about is keeping out the
cold, but you have to keep in mind not overheating. To avoid sweating it’s best
to wear breathable layers which will wick the sweat away from the body.
Beware
the wind
There
are a lot of people who wouldn’t fancy going out on a windy day, but as long as
you’re a good distance from cliff edges the wind good be your friend. Check the
direction the wind and plan a walk where the wind will be behind you, it can
really help when facing steep slopes.
Changeable
weather
The
weather forecasters don’t always get in right so it’s best to be prepared and flexible.
Even if it looks like it’s going to stay dry pack a waterproof layer, light garments
that can be packed away until needed are a must have in changeable conditions.
It’s also probably a good idea to stay flexible with your route plan, it’s not
a good idea to persist further into a walk on moors if the fog and rain are
coming in.
Fill
up for fuel
Walking
at any time of year burns our bodies fuel and water resources, but the winter
with the wind and snow can be more taxing than the hottest day. Stay hydrated
and eat foods that are high in energy.
Keep
those tootsies nice and toasty
The
part of your body that is going to take the most punishment is your feet. This
time of year, it’s so important keep those toes dry as long periods can cause
problems, so we suggest investing in the best footwear that you can afford.
Also keep in mind that wet equals slippy so pay extra attention to the grip of your
