Sisters are doin' it for themselves!

The days of shooting being just a male pursuit are over as more and more women take up the sport.
We love the sport so much here at Reid Outdoors that we think everyone no mater the age, sex or ability should be encouraged to get involved . So in this weeks blog we will discuss the many options for women to get involved.

You don't have to live in the country to get involved in shooting there are many clubs in towns & cities, plus weekend trips to the countryside so don't let location put you off. There are things to consider before you start.

Would you like to shoot clays, game or both. Clay shooting is mainly done through clubs with their own grounds and traps and if you live in towns or have a limited amount of time to shoot this could be the choice for you.

Game shooting refers mostly to Hares, pheasants, partridges and grouse. This kind of shooting takes place more in the country on managed land, but can lead to some lovely wild meat on your dinning table.

Which ever type of shooting you choose there are somethings that you'll need to have in order to start. You will need get a shotgun certificate, a gun, the correct clothing, shooting etiquette and safety rules. The Shooting UK website for more detailed information on all these items.

Although there is nothing to say that women can't just go along with the men to shoot, there are some ladies who just feel more comfortable in the presence of other females.

Here are just some of the great clubs that are out there.

  • Holland & Holland shooting ground is one of the longest running grounds in the country and it has had the longest running ladies shoot Green Feathers sine 1995. The school has over 1400 ladies that attend.
  • If you're looking to make lifelong friendships whilst following your passion for shooting then The Shotgun & Chelsea Bun Club  is the one for you. Established in 2011 the club has welcomed over 15000 women to it's events, giving them the opportunity to get expert advice what ever their skill level. Their message is 'No Pressure, No cliques, just full on support, fun and inclusive clay days for women'.
  • Run by Lady Emma Ingilby the Ripley Castle Shoot one of the fist ladies only pheasant shoots in the country and the numbers still increase every year.  The shoots are the same as any other shoot except the champers is pink. Men are welcome on the shoot to help look after your every whim.
  • The Cheshire High Bird Ladies Shooting Club was set up by Tracey Telford with the idea of introducing ladies to the exhilarating world of shooting in a comfortable, relaxed environment.
  • The Scottish Ladies Shooting Club  was established in late 2013 by Lesley Fleming & Cara Richardson, who where both so passionate about shooting that they decided to increase the number of shooting days for women across Scotland.

These are just a few of the many clubs that are out there for women as well a special shooting days across the country. With the number of ladies out there shooting and the success of  champion shooters such as

Caroline Povey, Charlote Kerwood, Rachel Parish & Sharon Niven , the female presence in the sport will only get bigger!
