Black Friday, where did this craziness come from?

well it's that time of year again when we all get a little bit crazy over grabbing a bargain.
In this weeks blog we thought we'd try to delve in to where Black Friday came from.

There are lots of different stories about how Black Friday began, some say it began in the late 1800's when a two greedy business men tried to buy up all the gold eventually causing a crash that was referred to as Black Friday. Another suggestion was that it came from a business term for coming out of the red. It was thought that companies struggled for most of the year, until the Thanksgiving holiday when people had the time off to take advantage of the low prices, which would push businesses back into the red.

It's also been claimed that it was the large department store, Macy's that in 1924 began their famous Thanksgiving Day parade, and noticed a large jump in sales the day after.

The truth however is the term 'Black Friday' was first used by the  Philadelphia police, who in the 1950's had to all work on the day after Thanksgiving due to the surge in locals and visitors on the streets before the big Army vs Navy football game. However by the early 1960's the businesses in Philadelphia had come to realise that all the extra people around on Black Friday had caused a upturn in business and tried to change the name to Big Friday, but by then the original name had stuck.

By the 1980's the idea of Black Friday had spread across the U.S and retailers had moved towards a more positive meaning for the day, buy promoting the idea of moving from the red into the black by having massive sales. Now the idea has spread all over the world and customers can take advantage of massive savings in their favourite stores.
